A look of Confusion. Lost your Marbles?
A look of Confusion. Lost your Marbles?

Have you ever fallen into hysteria when stressed, unable to muster your brain power to speak or defend yourself under pressure?

Regardless of whether or not stress leaves you powerless to speak, stress does in fact inhibit our ability to debate an issue with our usual gusto and confidence.

Most of us are aware of dominance factors, at the very least by which hand we write with. But, so too, do we have a dominant hemisphere of the brain through which we code our lives and experiences.

Here’s the deal though… when we’re stressed, the non dominant hemisphere of our brain checks out... not good.

Especially so given that each hemisphere of the brain controls the opposite side of the body. so it’s a global issue when we’re stressed.

I won’t even go into all the ways it impedes our reaction to challenges (that’s a book in itself). But I can give you a simple and highly effective technique to give you back all your “marbles” and your capacity to remain calm, centered, and focused during stressful times.

It’s called the “Wayne Cook Posture” and was pioneered by Wayne Cook in his study of Bioenergetics in the 1970s. He noted the benefits for both dyslexia and stuttering and I can attest to the effectiveness in both arenas over the last twenty years of teaching this technique.

Some people do very well under pressure, others not so much. However stress affects you personally, you’ll find relief in taking the time to do this simple technique:

The Wayne Cook Posture for Calm and Clarity.

Sit in a chair for this one. and breathe deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth as you straighten your spine on the in breath, relaxing on the out breath. The positioning of your arms and legs (crossing over) helps to facilitate the global crossover between hemispheres, restoring your marbles, and even movement if that’s involved in your overwhelm. (Think being stopped in your tracks in a moment of crisis.)

Usually about six breaths on each side will unscramble your force fields. At the end, bring your hands into a prayerful position at your heart for a few breaths.

A powerful technique to be able to express yourself clearly and calmly (especially under pressure). Also great to do before a presentation or speech.

Great for teachers, students, even CEO’s in boardrooms. Theater groups? Do this together for a seamless performance!
